Benedict odiase, Nigeria composer, police officer and great patriot was the composer of ” Arise, O

Compatriots,” the national anthem of Nigeria.

He worked with  Nigeria Police Band and composed the song while in service.

The song, “Arise, O Compatriots,” was adopted in 1978 to replace the country’s previous national anthem ” Nigeria, we Hail Thee” which was a legacy of colonial rule.

Odiase was the Director of music with the Nigeria Police Band until he retired in 1992 as a Deputy Commissioner of Police.
He died on June 12, 2013 after a protracted illness.
